Season 6
Season 6 picks up where the last one left off, with Janeway making some very questionable decisions. This season isn't quite as strong as the previous two, and it includes two episodes about a holodeck recreation of Fair Haven, an Irish seaside town. Fans famously hate these episodes. We'll also see the return of Kes for a single episode that fans also hate. Enjoy!

Equinox (Part II)

Voyager finds another Starfleet ship which has been under constant attack by inter-dimensional aliens.

🍿
Cliffhanger: In the previous episode, Janeway had just been attacked and knocked down by one of the aliens! Here, in the exciting conclusion, she... um... she gets up.

Admiral Pips: Pips are awarded to episodes that are the most stand-out, representative examples of the series as a whole.

Thoughts: It's time for another lesson about how important Starfleet principles and morals are! In fact, they're SO important, that when someone violates them, they must be brought to justice by any means necessary, including violating Starfleet principles! Listen, what Ransom did is obviously wrong and immoral; I'm not defending him. But then Janeway goes off the deep end and Chakotay just backs down when he's told to go to his room without supper. It took Ransom to come back to his senses and do the right thing for Janeway to come back from the edge, herself. Sure, it's an interesting concept for a story, but generally speaking, we don't want to see our hero doing bad things. At the very least, if she's going to do bad things, we should have had more time to see her afterwards, reflecting on the things she did and perhaps expressing regret in order to redeem herself a little bit. Instead, the episode just wraps up and we never really talk about this again. Honestly, between this and Janeway's actions (by proxy) in "Course: Oblivion", I really am starting to think that her obsessions are dangerous and that she may not be fit for command.

Anyway, despite all that, this is still a pretty good two-parter. With the introduction of a second Federation ship and a second captain, we sort of secretly know that neither of those things are going to last beyond this story. Even the junior officers who get absorbed into Voyager's crew are never seen or heard from again. Oh come on, that's not a spoiler. You knew perfectly well that none of these new characters were going to last beyond this story.

Watch Recommendation: This two-parter is definitely representative of Voyager's constant message that upholding Starfleet ideals is essential to survival in the Delta Quadrant. I'm making this a "Must Watch."

Thoughts: I'm not a big fan, but it seems to be well-liked by others. In flashbacks, the disconnected drones are confused, directionless, even scared. This further serves to humanize the Borg and make them more relatable, a path I wish this show hadn't taken.

Thoughts: "Forget the ritual! It's meaningless!" Oh, gosh, it's "Sacred Ground" all over again. Well, if you can get past the silly science that got us into this situation, the story of B'Elanna coming to terms with what has happened is actually pretty good.

I'm not convinced of Janeway's quick progression from practical hesitation to "Oh, okay, your antics were ridiculous but adorable, so here's a medal, and we'll think about letting you have command duties, why not?" but aside from that, this was an enjoyable watch.

Tuvok loses his memory after being attacked by a cloaked intruder. Neelix aids in his recovery while a local investigator helps Voyager track down the assailant.

Thoughts: Oh good, it's Tuvix all over again. The writers have once again realized that Tuvok and Neelix are opposites: one is an emotionally-suppressed, logically disciplined Vulcan, and the other is a flamboyant idiot. Obviously that makes for endless story potential!

Nitpickery: Neelix cautions Janeway that Tuvok is not ready for an interrogation, and she insists that they'll "tread lightly"... and then they proceed to question him while breathing down his neck in a stressful tight-quarters interrogation.

Thoughts: This episode gets a ⚑ penalty flag because in its 44-minute run, the real Voyager ship and crew only occupy about 4 minutes and 25 seconds. If you subtract the 2 minutes and 35 seconds of opening and closing credits, Voyager's participation is only about 10.7% of the episode, which makes this an 89.3% episode of Star Trek: Reginald Barclay.

Watch Recommendation: Despite this being a story mostly about Barclay and not about Voyager, it's a good episode and it importantly establishes contact between Voyager and Earth. Thoughts: You know, when you write characters to be annoying and rude, that doesn't come across as funny and quirky. It comes across as – believe it or not – annoying and rude. I'm not really a fan of this episode, both because of the Qomar and the Doctor being a self-absorbed jerk. His actions are incredibly selfish, and it seems very out of character for him. Yes, he's often arrogant about his abilities and feels underappreciated by the crew, but I don't believe he would just abandon his responsibilities like he does here. Seven is kidnapped and forced to fight Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and a Hirogen who sounds suspiciously like General Martok.

💁‍♂️
Penk is played by Jeffrey Combs. This is his only role in Voyager, but in Deep Space Nine he is known for playing between three and eight different characters (depending on which ones you consider to be unique). He also played two characters on Enterprise and provides the voice for a megalomaniacal computer on Lower Decks.
💁‍♂️
The Hirogen fighter in this episode is played by J.G. Hertzler, probably better known for his role as General Martok in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
📏
J.G. Hertzler and his stunt double are 6'0" (182.9 cm), so the Hirogen have shrunk again since we last saw them.

Episode involves the Borg — only five juvenile Borg (and one infant).

Thoughts: Once again we have another Borg story that doesn't really involve the collective. In this case, it's a group of young, disconnected Borg who are immature, confused, directionless, and scared, so the audience sympathizes with them. By the end of this episode, the Doctor must be getting pretty good at just turning Borg back into humans like it's no big deal.

Nitpickery: We never find out what happens to the Borg infant. Did the writers just forget to tie up that loose end?

A trio of con artists impersonate Voyager crewmembers.

Thoughts: I guess I just don't understand the motivations of this band of thieves. They scanned the Starfleet database and they thought, "Let's impersonate these people," but... why? It's never really explained how posing as Starfleet officers would be any more profitable than any of the other con jobs they've pulled. And even if they've never conceived of lying about an alliance of planets before, there would be no reason they'd have to specifically and precisely mimic the Federation. They didn't seem to hold any particular grudge against Voyager, so tarnishing their name wasn't part of their motivation either. In fact, impersonating the Voyager crew is what led to their capture. If they had just told a slightly different lie, Voyager never would have gotten involved. And then there's the matter of the man impersonating Tuvok who is more concerned about being true to his character than pulling off whatever con job they're on. Is that supposed to be... funny? I assume so, since that would fit in with their comically-large combadges, but impersonating a Vulcan – the most humorless species in Star Trek – probably isn't a recipe for comedy. Now, if they had had someone doing an even more over-the-top impersonation of Neelix... that might have done the trick.

Watch Recommendation: You could try to convince me that this is self-parody and not meant to be taken too seriously, but you wouldn't succeed. Even if I did believe that, I think it fails as a comedy, too. No recommendation.

Watch Recommendation: This episode includes the return of Barclay and Troi, but at least this time the story actually includes one of the Voyager crew. It's a fine story with development for the Doctor and his creator, Lewis Zimmerman. I'm making this a "Must Watch."

Neelix tells the Borg children a ghost story.

🔗\
It's yet another episode that references past events that we never actually saw on screen. Neelix says everything started a few months prior, before the Borg children came aboard, but none of the events have been seen until now. I guess Deck Twelve has just been closed off for months?
🔗\
This is possibly the only time that someone incorrectly refers to Neelix's "lungs" and is not corrected. Neelix only has one lung because of the events of VOY 1x05: Phage, but Tuvok tells him to envision his "lungs" filled with light. Either the writers finally forgot, or they decided the running gag had run its course.
If I say yes, will it prevent you from telling the story? — Tuvok, to an undeterred Neelix.

Thoughts: Eh, I thought this ghost-story-style episode was fun. I rather enjoyed it. I think it would have been a little funnier if they had done a little more of Neelix making mistakes in the story or coloring the story based on his own personality – we could have seen all our characters saying and doing silly things according to Neelix's recollection.

Watch Recommendation: It's an okay episode, but it's pretty inconsequential. No recommendation.

Thoughts: This is the culmination of Voyager's nerfing of the Borg, and it's something I cannot abide. Gone are the days when a single Borg cube was an impenetrable fortress, an ominous juggernaut that strikes fear in the hearts of all who regard it. Janeway doesn't just go after any cube, she picks a freaking super-cube. And then, of course, Spoiler » Janeway's plan is to get assimilated. Janeway's plan is to get assimilated. Assimilation, up to this point, has been portrayed as bestowing a lifelong trauma for anyone who manages to escape the collective, but Janeway just flippantly decides assimilation is a great idea! After all, we suddenly have this magic neural suppressant that will keep us sapient, and we're experts at un-Borgifying people these days! Hey, that reminds me, the four Borg children are weirdly absent from this story. One would think they might have some sort of input on this insane mission. Well, anyway, the good drones do battle with the bad drones in Unimatrix Zero, an artificial construct where they physically fight each other and make crude traps with the local foliage, none of which makes sense since none of it is real, but, no matter, we have action! Romance! Drama! A ticking clock! Excitement! Intrigue! Spoiler » And don't forget explosions! The Delta Flyer is blown to smithereens but somehow magically reappears in the very next episode! The very next episode, which is another Borg-related episode, but we're barely going to mention the physical and emotional scarring three of our heroes suffered in this two-parter!

Nitpickery: Why the hell is Neelix manning a bridge station? Shouldn't that hedgehog be down in the kitchen poisoning someone?

Watch Recommendation: This story takes the Borg, the Federation's most lethal enemy, and makes them little more than a nuisance. Despite my dislike of the episode, it's an important two-parter that you should see and judge for yourself. I'm making this a "Must Watch."
