Season 1
Welcome to the opening season of Star Trek: Voyager. Season 1 is a little awkward as the actors get used to their roles, and also because it seems to end abruptly after only sixteen episodes. Obviously, the premiere will set up the story for how Voyager got stuck in the Delta Quadrant, but after that, it will settle almost immediately into "business as usual." Unlike Deep Space Nine, this show will be almost entirely episodic, more like TOS and TNG. So, look forward to some action, adventure, betrayal, and swordplay, why not!

While searching for members of the Maquis in The Badlands, Voyager is thrown into the Delta Quadrant by the Caretaker (aka banjo-man).

🔀
Crossover: Quark, Morn (DS9)
👽
First Contact: Caretaker, Kazon, Talaxians, Ocampans
😓
Forever an ensign: Poor, dumb Harry nearly gets swindled by Quark, but luckily Tom Paris swoops in and Harry Kim's weird little crush on him is born.

Thoughts: The concept for Voyager is a good one, on paper. At this point, there have been four Star Trek shows which have all taken place primarily in the Alpha Quadrant. (Yes, Deep Space Nine included the Gamma Quadrant, too.) We've dealt with the Klingons and the Romulans and maybe we're running out of story ideas for them... so let's strand a ship in the Delta Quadrant, a part of the galaxy we've never explored, so we can dream up new species and new stories to go along with them! Great! Then, one of the first species we meet is the Kazon, a sort of barbarous, warrior race with forehead ridges... or, basically, "Delta Quadrant Klingons." Ugh, what's the point of coming up with new species if you're just going to use the old ones but paint them a different color?

Indeed the show delivered on (some) new(-ish) species and new stories, and it did have that sort of familiar TNG-feel to it, but with a noticeable uptick in action over conversation. I very much enjoyed the show when it first aired in 1995, but over the years I have come to notice some of its flaws and shortcomings.

As series premieres go, this one certainly sets up some interesting threads, but the show really doesn't follow-through on many of them. The entire premiere is more of a prologue to the series, merely setting up the story of how they ended up in the Delta Quadrant. By the third episode, it's "business as usual" with a weekly story, often disconnected from any other story. Concepts introduced in this premiere, like the Caretaker and the strife among a mixed Starfleet-Maquis crew, are only occasionally revisited.

Nitpickery: I can't get the first officer's little dramatic sprint across the bridge out of my mind. It's comically stupid.

Watch Recommendation: It's the series premiere, so obviously it's a "Must Watch." It is also the first of eight episodes on the "Bare Minimum" track.

Time Hijinks
I've been designed with the information from two thousand medical reference sources and the experience of forty-seven individual medical officers. I am the embodiment of modern medicine. How much dirt do you need? — The Doctor

Thoughts: Paris is conscripted to be a field medic because he took two semesters of biochemistry at the academy. Wow, I'd hate to be a patient subjected to his tender mercies. There's over a hundred people on the ship, is there really no one better suited to train as a field medic? Janeway took all of 3 seconds to make that decision.

Janeway and Torres saying “WARP PARTICLES!” in unison is hilarious. What even are warp particles?! This is the only – and I mean ONLY – episode in the entire Star Trek franchise that mentions them. Ha, this episode is just silly, and it's also sort of the last time for a while that we'll deal with the consequences of merging the Starfleet and Maquis crews.

Nitpickery: It's worth noting that Tuvok wears the rank insignia of a Lieutenant Commander, while both Paris and Torres wear the rank insignia of a full Lieutenant. These will change in episode 1x13 without any explanation.

Watch Recommendation: It's not a great episode, but I really think you should watch it, if only because it's the first non-premiere, "real" episode that gives you a better taste of what the show's going to be like, and it carries forward some of the story from the premiere. I'm going to mark it as "Recommended."

Forever an ensign: Harry is more focused on that "transtator assembly diagnostic" than going on a double-date with the Delany sisters. If only Tom hadn't invited the ladies, maybe Harry would be more interested.

Watch Recommendation: This episode marks the beginning of the "business as usual, episode of the week" sort of storytelling. This episode is actually pretty good, but it is a one-off story that doesn't impact the rest of the series. No recommendation.

Spoiler » Lieutenant Carey, after being proven innocent of communicating with the Kazon in this episode, apparently decided to lay low, because he suddenly and quietly disappears from the show. He is in an episode in Season 5 and another in Season 6, but in both of those cases, he appears in a flashback scene. Finally, he appears "for real" randomly in one episode of Season 7, implying that he's always been around, just never shown on screen.

🔫
Although sometimes mentioned in dialogue, this is only one of two episodes in the entire Trek franchise that explicitly depicts a personal phaser being fired with a wide-beam setting. The first episode was from the Original Series, TOS 1x21: The Return of the Archons. The wide beam is obviously not used more often because it's too convenient of a solution that would be helpful in countless other episodes, so most of the time we just pretend it doesn't exist, like good little audience members.

Nitpickery: Apparently someone working on the show decided to rework the ranks of various officers during this episode. Tuvok's rank insignia changes between a Lieutenant and a Lieutenant Commander depending on the scene, while Paris's rank insignia changes between a full Lieutenant and a Lieutenant Junior Grade depending on the scene. Meanwhile, Torres's rank has been reduced to Lieutenant Junior Grade in every scene where her rank insignia is visible. Prior to this episode, all three officers held the higher rank, and after this episode they all move forward with the lower rank.

Watch Recommendation: I gave this an average rating, but after watching it again, I'm beginning to think maybe it was a little below-average. It does create an interesting mystery and has some good action, but some of it is a little silly. Anyway, it's a one-off that doesn't add to the overall story, so I'm not giving it a recommendation.

This episode wasn't intended to be the season finale, which is why it's lacking in the type of action/adventure one would expect. Instead, Season 1 just sort of fizzles out.
😓
Forever an ensign: Harry seems all too happy to tell crewman Chell that he's missed a spot while degaussing the transporter. "Ha ha! Finally! Ol' Harry Kim gets to call the shots!"

Thoughts: Janeway says she wants to make the crewmen feel like "part of the team," so Tuvok proceeds to put them through basic training and treat them like raw cadets. When they object, Chakotay punches one of them in the face and says he'll keep punching him in the face until he does what he's told, damn it! I'm sorry, WHAT? The episode proceeds to try and make it seem like Tuvok learned as much from the crewmen as they learned from him, but it does a poor job of that.

Watch Recommendation: This episode suddenly remembers about that whole Starfleet/Maquis crew thing, and tries to show us that there are still some issues integrating the two. The problem is, there's still no follow-up. We will see crewman Chell in exactly one more episode. And the other three? Never again! So cross this episode off your list, I'm not giving it a recommendation.
