“In what order should I watch Star Trek?”
July 2, 2026
A spiraling vortex in space with names of several Star Trek shows swirling around it

It's the eternal question about watching Star Trek. Maybe you've caught a few episodes on TV and now you want to see more. Maybe you watched a whole series and want to try a different one. Or maybe you're a long-time Trek fan and you want to introduce friends and family to the show. If you ask fans, many will have very strong opinions about your watch order, and many of those opinions will be different, often times depending on the age of the person you ask! In the worst cases, some fans may even gatekeep the experience and make watching feel like a chore rather than the delightful adventure that it should be. Feel free to ask for advice, but ultimately the decision is yours. Below, I will try to clear up some of the noise and give you my best advice that is generic enough for you to make an informed decision on your own. The most important takeaway is to enjoy the story!

Don't Panic • Enjoy the Ride • You won't “miss” anything

Generations of Star Trek: First Generation Trek (1966-1991)Second Generation Trek (1987-2005)Kelvin Timeline Films (2009-2016)Third Generation Trek (2017-present)

Suggested Watch Tracks

Still looking for suggestions? If you think you might actually tackle the entire Star Trek franchise, here are a few ways you could go about it. Good luck!

Track 1: Mostly-Release Order
(simple)

One obvious way to tackle this is just to watch everything in the order that it was released! This list gives you mostly that, but it keeps important storylines together, such as keeping the films near their related series.
  1. The Original Series
  2. The Animated Series
  3. Films #1–#6
  4. The Next Generation
  5. Films #7–#10
  6. Deep Space Nine
  7. Voyager
  8. Enterprise
  9. Alternate/Kelvin Timeline Films #11–#13
  10. Discovery
  11. Film #14
  12. Picard
  13. Lower Decks
  14. Prodigy
  15. Strange New Worlds
  16. Starfleet Academy
Track 2: Mostly-Release Order
(more precise)

I actually don't recommend this track. Track 1 actually keeps important storylines together, but if you really want the experience of watching things in the order they were released for some strange reason, here's a list closer to that schedule.

Track 3: Mostly-chronological
This list puts shows in a more chronological order based on the Star Trek universe, while still maintaining prequel fidelity. TNG and DS9 overlap in the timeline, so this watch list keeps things chunked into full seasons even if they aren't quite exact. VOY also overlaps DS9, but since VOY ends up being its own self-contained story on the other side of the galaxy, it is kept separate on this list.

23rd century:
  1. Discovery (Seasons 1 & 2)
  2. The Original Series
  3. The Animated Series
  4. Strange New Worlds (prequel to TOS)
  5. Films #1–#6
  6. Alternate/Kelvin Timeline Films #11–#13

24th century:
  1. Film #14

  3. Deep Space Nine (Seasons 1–3)

  5. Film #7
  6. Deep Space Nine (Seasons 4–5)
  7. Film #8
  8. Deep Space Nine (Seasons 6–7)
  9. Film #9
  10. Voyager
  11. Film #10
  12. Enterprise (prequel series, 22nd century)
  13. Lower Decks
  14. Prodigy
  15. Picard

32nd century:
  1. Discovery (Seasons 3–5)
  2. Starfleet Academy
Track 4: Modern-interspersed
If you are averse to watching shows from the 1900s (ha!) and would like to intersperse your historical viewing with modern shows, this list provides a decent balance and keeps things in a sensible order.
  1. Discovery (Seasons 1 & 2)
  2. The Original Series
